CalDigit TS4 vs TS5: the practical answer
The CalDigit TS4 and CalDigit TS5 are not really old dock versus new dock in the simple way the names suggest. The TS4 is CalDigit’s mature Thunderbolt 4 flagship. The TS5 is the newer Thunderbolt 5 model with more bandwidth, more charging power, and a much higher display ceiling on the right host computer.
That last phrase matters: on the right host computer. The TS5 can do things the TS4 cannot do, but the YAML makes clear that those advantages depend heavily on the laptop. CalDigit lists dual 4K 240Hz, triple 4K 144Hz, and even quad 4K 144Hz configurations for specific Thunderbolt 5 Mac and Windows systems. It also lists base M1, M2, and M3 Macs as single-display systems through Thunderbolt, and Thunderbolt 3 Windows PCs as not compatible. The TS4 is less exciting on paper, but it is also easier to recommend. Thunderbolt generation and bandwidth
This is the headline difference. The TS4 is a Thunderbolt 4 dock with a 40 Gbps host connection. The TS5 is a Thunderbolt 5 dock with an 80 Gbps host connection. If your laptop and peripherals can use Thunderbolt 5, the TS5 has a real performance advantage. The product YAML specifically calls out fast external SSDs and high-refresh displays as the situations where Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth matters.
That does not make the TS4 slow. For many desks, 40 Gbps is still enough. A dual 4K 60Hz monitor setup, wired Ethernet, a keyboard, a mouse, audio, an SD card, and a few USB devices do not automatically require Thunderbolt 5. The TS4 was built for that kind of desk, and its 9.2 score reflects how complete it still is.
The TS5 is for a narrower buyer. It makes sense if you own a Thunderbolt 5 Mac or PC, use fast external storage, want to attach several USB-C or Thunderbolt displays, or need 140W host charging. If you are plugging the dock into an older Thunderbolt 4 machine, the TS5 loses some of the reason to exist. It may still work depending on the host, but you are buying a faster dock than your laptop can fully exploit.

Port layout and everyday usability
The TS4 has the easier port story. It has 18 total ports, including three downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports, three USB-C 3.2 ports, five USB-A 3.2 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4 output, 2.5GbE, SD and microSD card readers, and three separate audio connections. The YAML also notes that the TS4 requires no drivers and works plug and play across macOS, Windows, ChromeOS, and Linux.
The TS5 has 15 ports. It includes three downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports, three USB-C 3.2 ports, two USB-A ports, 2.5GbE, SD and microSD card readers, one combo audio jack, and a Kensington lock slot. The three downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports are the best part of the layout. They give you flexible expansion for USB-C displays, Thunderbolt displays, fast external SSDs, capture gear, and adapters.
The trade-off is that the TS5 removes some of the fixed convenience that made the TS4 so easy to live with. The TS4 has a built-in DisplayPort output. The TS5 has no HDMI and no DisplayPort. Every display connects through a downstream Thunderbolt 5 port directly or through a USB-C video adapter. The TS4 also has more USB-A, more total ports, and separate headphone and microphone jacks instead of only one combo jack.
For a desk with newer USB-C displays and Thunderbolt accessories, the TS5 layout is clean. For a desk with older USB-A gear, a DisplayPort monitor, separate audio, and several everyday accessories, the TS4 is less fussy.

Display support
The TS5 has the better display ceiling, but it is also the more conditional dock.
The TS4 supports up to two displays. The YAML lists single 8K 30Hz on Windows, single 4K 60Hz, and dual 4K 60Hz via DisplayPort 1.4. On Mac, dual displays require an M1 Pro, M1 Max, or later chip. Base M1, M2, and M3 Macs are listed as limited to one external display because of the host computer, not because of the dock.
The TS5 supports up to four displays in the product data. The listed configurations are more ambitious: single 8K 60Hz depending on host, display, adapter, cable, and DSC support; dual 4K 240Hz on compatible macOS and Windows computers; triple 4K 144Hz on M5 Pro, M5 Max, and supported Thunderbolt 5 Windows PCs; and quad 4K 144Hz on M5 Max. Those are serious numbers, but they are not universal. The YAML repeatedly ties them to host support.
So the correct display recommendation depends on the monitor plan. If you want two normal 4K 60Hz displays, the TS4 is enough and has a simpler buying case. If you want high-refresh 4K displays, three displays, or four displays, and your host is explicitly capable of those modes, the TS5 is the better choice.

Charging power
The TS5 wins charging. The TS4 provides up to 98W USB-C Power Delivery to the host. That is enough for many laptops, including normal use on a 16-inch MacBook Pro according to the TS4 FAQ.
The TS5 raises host charging to 140W. The product YAML describes that as enough for demanding MacBook Pro and workstation laptops that support USB-C PD 3.1 EPR. This is one of the clearest TS5 upgrades because it does not require you to care about monitor refresh rates or storage benchmarks. If your laptop can accept 140W over USB-C, the TS5 can replace more of your charger setup with one cable.
Accessory charging is more mixed. The TS5 has one front USB-C port with 20W accessory charging, while its own cons call out that only one front USB-C port provides 20W. The TS4 spreads lower accessory charging across several USB-C and USB-A ports, with 15W on its Thunderbolt 4 downstream ports and 7.5W on several USB ports.
Charging winner: TS5 for host charging. TS4 remains fine if 98W covers your laptop.
Ethernet, card readers, and audio
Both docks cover the core creative desk features. Both list 2.5GbE, SD, and microSD. The TS4 card readers are listed as UHS-II at 312 MB/s. The TS5 card readers are listed as SD 4.0 / UHS-II. Both are reasonable choices for photographers and video editors who want built-in readers instead of a loose dongle.
Ethernet is a tie on paper because both YAML files list 1 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps speeds. The TS5 has one extra caveat: the compatibility section notes that Ethernet and some PCIe-based functions may not work on USB4 hosts without PCIe tunneling. That is not unusual for advanced USB4 and Thunderbolt features, but it is still another reminder that the TS5 is more host-dependent.
Audio favors the TS4. It has a 3.5mm combo jack, a headphone output, and a microphone input. The TS5 has a single 3.5mm combo jack. That may not matter if you use USB audio, Bluetooth headphones, or a monitor audio path, but the TS4 is the more complete dock for analog audio.
Feature winner: TS4 by a small but real margin. Both cover Ethernet and card readers, but the TS4 gives you more audio flexibility and fewer USB4 caveats.
Compatibility and setup risk
The TS4 is the safer compatibility pick. Its YAML lists macOS 11.0 Big Sur or later, Windows 10, ChromeOS, and Linux. It requires no drivers. Its main known incompatibility is the familiar base Apple Silicon display limit: base M1, M2, and M3 MacBook Air and Pro models are limited to one external display. That limitation is from the host, not the dock.
The TS5 also requires no driver for normal Thunderbolt, USB, display, Ethernet, audio, and charging functions. CalDigit offers a macOS utility for storage eject support and a separate SuperDrive driver, but the dock itself is not a DisplayLink-style driver product. The difference is that the TS5 compatibility section is more complicated. It lists macOS 15 or above, Windows 10, and ChromeOS. It also lists Thunderbolt 3 Windows PCs as not compatible, USB4 hosts without PCIe tunneling as potentially losing Ethernet or PCIe-based functions, and HDMI-only or DisplayPort-only monitor setups as requiring adapters.
The TS5 common issues are also more tied to early-generation Thunderbolt 5 behavior: displays may not wake cleanly after sleep on some systems, SSD performance can drop when several high-resolution displays share the dock, and Ethernet can be unavailable on some USB4 hosts. None of that makes the TS5 a bad dock. It just makes it less automatic.

The TS4 costs $379.99 MSRP in the YAML. The TS5 costs $399.99. That $20 difference is small enough that price alone should not decide the comparison. The better question is whether your desk needs Thunderbolt 5.
The warranty difference is larger. The TS4 lists a 24-month limited warranty. The TS5 lists a 12-month limited warranty. That matters because docks are the center of the desk. They handle power, displays, Ethernet, storage, and peripherals every day. A longer warranty is not a spec-sheet thrill, but it is useful.

It is still the CalDigit dock I would point most MacBook Pro, Windows ultrabook, and home office users toward if they want a stable one-cable desk setup.
The CalDigit TS5 is the more advanced dock. It wins on Thunderbolt generation, bandwidth, host charging, and display ceiling. If you already have a Thunderbolt 5 Mac or Windows laptop, need 140W charging, use fast external SSDs, and want high-refresh 4K displays through USB-C or Thunderbolt, the TS5 is the more future-ready choice. Just do not buy it blindly for an older laptop and expect every headline spec to appear.
