This is the core decision.
The WD19S connects through USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode. That means it does not need DisplayLink software or a Thunderbolt controller, but it also depends heavily on the host laptop’s DisplayPort bandwidth. Dell’s own notes for the WD19S repeatedly hinge on whether the laptop supports HBR3 with Display Stream Compression.
The WD19TBS connects over Thunderbolt 3 at 40 Gbps. That gives it much more room for displays and data at the same time. It is still an older Thunderbolt 3 dock, not Thunderbolt 4, but the raw connection is a major upgrade over the USB-C WD19S.
Connectivity winner: Dell WD19TBS. Thunderbolt 3’s 40 Gbps link is the reason to buy it.
Display Support
The WD19S has an unusual spec sheet because Dell lists up to four displays, but only under strict host conditions. With an HBR3 host and Display Stream Compression, it can handle dual 4K@60Hz and triple QHD@60Hz. Dell also lists a quad-display mode with 3x QHD@60Hz plus 1x HD@60Hz when a fourth display is daisy-chained through a DisplayPort monitor. On older HBR2 systems, the WD19S can drop as low as single 4K@30Hz or dual 1080p@60Hz.
The WD19TBS is simpler. It supports dual 4K@60Hz over Thunderbolt 3 and a single 5K@60Hz mode via dual DisplayPort 1.4 with an HBR3 host. Its maximum display count is lower, but its common dual-monitor use case is more predictable.
Both docks have a port limitation worth knowing: HDMI and the rear USB-C multifunction DisplayPort output cannot be active as displays at the same time on the WD19 family design. For dual monitors, the two rear DisplayPort 1.4 outputs are usually the most reliable path.

Charging and Power
For compatible Dell laptops, both docks can reach the key number: 130W charging. That is the big advantage of buying into Dell’s own dock ecosystem. Standard USB-C Power Delivery docks usually top out lower, and non-Dell laptops connected to either of these Dell docks receive up to 90W.
The WD19S needs the right adapter version to reach Dell’s 130W mode. Its YAML notes that the 180W adapter can deliver up to 130W to compatible Dell laptops, while the 130W adapter version provides up to 90W to Dell systems. The WD19TBS uses Dell ExpressCharge and also requires its external 180W AC adapter.

Ports and Everyday Desk Use
The WD19S gives you two DisplayPort 1.4 outputs, HDMI 2.0, a rear USB-C multifunction DisplayPort output, two USB-C 3.2 ports, three USB-A 3.2 ports, and Gigabit Ethernet. There is no 3.5mm audio jack and no card reader.
The WD19TBS is extremely similar: two DisplayPort 1.4 outputs, HDMI 2.0, two USB-C 3.2 ports, three USB-A 3.2 ports, and Gigabit Ethernet. It also has no 3.5mm audio jack because the “S” variant removed the audio jack from the older WD19TB design. It has no SD or microSD card reader.
In practical terms, neither dock is a creator dock. If you need SD cards, microSD, audio, or 2.5GbE, you will need USB adapters or a more feature-rich dock.

The WD19S is best treated as a Dell/Windows USB-C dock. It can work for basic USB, Ethernet, charging, and one display on macOS, but macOS multi-monitor support is limited because this class of USB-C dock relies on MST-style display routing.
The WD19TBS works with macOS over Thunderbolt 3, but Dell does not officially support Mac. Its YAML specifically notes that base M1, M2, and M3 MacBook Air/Pro models are limited to one external display because of Apple Silicon limits. M1 Pro/Max and later chips can support more displays, but Dell support will not troubleshoot Mac-specific problems.

The catch is simple: do not buy the WD19S just because it is cheaper if you need guaranteed dual 4K@60Hz. The cost savings disappear quickly if your USB-C laptop falls back to dual 1080p or 4K@30Hz.

The Dell WD19TBS is the better technical dock. Thunderbolt 3 at 40 Gbps, dual 4K@60Hz support, and a single 5K@60Hz mode make it the more capable option for display-heavy setups.
