That single difference changes the whole recommendation. If you only need one or two monitors, the SD5780T is easier to live with. It has two downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports, a 1m cable, 96W host charging, 2.5GbE, an SD card reader, a 3.5mm combo jack, lock slots, TAA compliance, and Kensington’s three-year limited warranty. It is the more flexible dock for a MacBook Pro or a mixed desk with Thunderbolt storage.
The SD5800T is for a more specific buyer. It gives up downstream Thunderbolt accessory expansion and uses that budget for fixed video outputs instead. Why the SD5800T wins overall
The SD5800T wins because its product data shows a more ambitious dock with a higher score. It is not automatically the dock every buyer should choose, but it has the stronger spec sheet when the comparison is limited to these two Kensington models.
The first advantage is display output. The SD5800T lists four native video outputs: two HDMI 2.1 ports and two DisplayPort 1.4 ports. Its YAML lists quad 4K@60Hz for compatible Windows laptops, with the usual requirement that the host must support the needed display streams and DSC. The SD5780T is a two-display dock. It can run dual 4K@60Hz, dual 6K@60Hz on supported MacBook Pro or Max systems, and a single 4K@120Hz display through HDMI 2.1, but it is not built for a three or four-monitor Windows desk.
The second advantage is the card reader setup. The SD5800T includes both SD and microSD UHS-II readers. The SD5780T includes a full-size UHS-II SD reader only. If you move files from cameras, drones, action cameras, handheld gaming devices, or small recorders, the microSD slot is not a minor detail. It removes another small adapter from the desk.
The third advantage is the official pricing in the product files. The SD5800T has a $379.99 MSRP, while the SD5780T is listed at $399.99. Retail pricing can move in either direction, so this should not be treated as a permanent street-price claim. Still, based on the YAML alone, the SD5800T is the cheaper dock despite offering the bigger display ceiling.
The last advantage is small but real: host charging. The SD5800T lists 98W certified host charging. The SD5780T lists 96W. A 2W gap will not change much for an ultrabook, but it reinforces the same pattern. On paper, the newer quad-video dock has the stronger headline numbers.
Where the SD5780T still makes more sense
The SD5780T is not the loser because it is weak. It loses because the SD5800T is more specialized and scores higher. For many desks, the SD5780T is still the dock I would rather use every day.
The reason is downstream Thunderbolt 4. The SD5780T has two downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports rated at 40 Gbps with 15W power delivery each. Those ports can handle a second display, a Thunderbolt SSD, a USB-C monitor, or another high speed accessory. The SD5800T product data does not list downstream Thunderbolt 4 accessory ports beyond the host connection. It gives you fixed HDMI and DisplayPort outputs instead.
That trade is fine if monitors are the whole point. It is less appealing if your desk includes Thunderbolt storage, a USB-C monitor, or a device chain you already own. A creator with one HDMI monitor, one USB-C monitor, and a fast Thunderbolt SSD may find the SD5780T easier to cable than the SD5800T, even though the SD5800T has more total video connectors.
The SD5780T also has a simpler Mac story for many buyers. Both docks depend on native Apple display support. Neither one uses DisplayLink. Neither one can turn a base M1 or M2 MacBook into a true dual-display machine. The SD5800T product data even calls out that Mac users should treat it as a dual-display dock at best, not a quad-display dock. If your MacBook Pro supports two external displays, the SD5780T’s Thunderbolt ports may be more useful than the SD5800T’s four fixed video outputs.
Display support and monitor setup
The SD5800T is the obvious choice if your desk has three or four displays and your Windows laptop can drive them. Kensington’s own product data, as captured in the YAML, makes the host caveat clear: quad 4K depends on the laptop’s display capability, available bandwidth, and DSC support.
It also supports a single 8K@60Hz path through HDMI on Windows when the host, cable, and display support the needed DisplayPort Alt Mode and DSC route. The same YAML notes DisplayPort output up to 8K@30Hz. For MacBook Pro and Max chipsets, plus newer M4 models that support two external displays, it lists dual 6K@60Hz. Base M1 and M2 MacBooks are limited to one external display, and the dock will not work around that because it does not use DisplayLink.
The SD5780T takes a different approach. It has one HDMI 2.1 output, then uses its downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports for display expansion. The YAML lists a single 8K@60Hz display through a downstream Thunderbolt 4 port, a single 4K@120Hz display through HDMI 2.1, dual 4K@60Hz through HDMI 2.1 plus one downstream Thunderbolt 4 port, and dual 6K@60Hz on supported MacBook Pro or Max chipsets.
If your main monitor is a high-refresh 4K display, the SD5780T has a clean advantage through its HDMI 2.1 4K@120Hz mode. The SD5800T’s most compelling display mode is not a single gaming or creator monitor. It is a wall of standard 4K@60Hz office displays. That is a very different use case.

The SD5800T is listed as a 16-in-1 dock. Its port layout includes one Thunderbolt 4 host connection, two HDMI 2.1 ports, two DisplayPort 1.4 ports, one USB-C 3.2 port, six USB-A ports, 2.5GbE, SD and microSD UHS-II readers, a 3.5mm combo audio jack, DC power, and Kensington security slots. The included cable is 3.25 ft, and the product data mentions a vertical stand to keep the large dock from taking over the desk.
The SD5780T has fewer total ports, but the mix is more Thunderbolt-centric. It has the host Thunderbolt 4 port, two downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports, one HDMI 2.1 port, four USB-A 3.2 ports, 2.5GbE, a UHS-II SD reader, a 3.5mm combo jack, and a 1m Thunderbolt 4 cable. It also has dual Kensington lock slots, TAA compliance, optional DockWorks software, and the same three-year limited warranty as the SD5800T.
For basic peripherals, the SD5800T wins on quantity. Six USB-A ports can absorb a keyboard, mouse, webcam, audio interface, security key, and printer without using a hub. The SD5780T has four USB-A ports, which is enough for many desks but less comfortable if you have several older peripherals.
For high speed accessory expansion, the SD5780T wins. Two downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports are more valuable than a generic port count if your devices are Thunderbolt SSDs, USB-C monitors, or high bandwidth adapters. This is the main reason the SD5780T should stay on your shortlist even though it loses the overall verdict.
Power delivery is almost a tie
Power delivery should not decide this comparison for most buyers. The SD5800T provides 98W certified host charging. The SD5780T provides 96W. Both numbers are in the right range for most business laptops, ultrabooks, and many 14 to 16-inch productivity laptops.
The SD5800T gets the technical win because 98W is higher than 96W. In practice, that 2W gap will rarely matter. If your laptop is a high-power mobile workstation, neither dock may fully replace the original charger under sustained CPU and GPU load. If your laptop is a MacBook Pro, ThinkPad, Latitude, XPS, Surface, or similar productivity machine, both should be reasonable single-cable charging options as long as the laptop accepts USB-C Power Delivery in that range.
Accessory power is more different. The SD5780T’s downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports each provide 15W according to the product file. The SD5800T’s front USB-C 3.2 port is listed with 7.5W power delivery, and one USB-A 2.0 port is also listed with 7.5W. The SD5780T is the better dock if you want to power Thunderbolt accessories from the dock itself. The SD5800T is fine for peripherals and light device charging, but its strength is not Thunderbolt accessory power.
Compatibility and driver story
Both docks are native Thunderbolt 4 docks with no DisplayLink driver requirement. That is good for latency, image quality, and administrative simplicity. It also means the laptop’s native display support matters.
The SD5800T product file says core docking features are plug and play on supported Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, USB4, and USB-C hosts. Kensington DockWorks is optional for network management features. Windows 10 or later is listed, and macOS 11 or later is listed. The known incompatibilities are display-related: base M1 and M2 MacBooks are limited to one external display, MacBook Pro or Max systems should not expect four displays through this dock, and USB-C Alt Mode hosts depend heavily on the laptop’s own display bandwidth.
The SD5780T has the same broad foundation: no drivers required, plug and play on Windows 10 or later and macOS 11 or later, with optional DockWorks for MAC address passthrough and automatic WiFi management. Its known incompatibilities include base M1, M2, and M3 MacBooks being limited to one external display, USB-C only laptops being limited to one external display, and a community-reported issue where the second monitor may not work on some AMD Ryzen laptops when using a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter through a Thunderbolt downstream port.
Neither dock is a magic fix for laptop display limits. The SD5800T is more demanding because its best feature asks more from the host. Before buying it for quad 4K, check the laptop’s external display support, firmware, GPU driver status, and monitor cables. The SD5780T is less demanding because its target is one or two displays.
Price and value
The product files list the SD5800T at $379.99 MSRP and the SD5780T at $399.99 MSRP. On that basis, the SD5800T has the better value argument. It costs less in the YAML, scores higher, charges at 98W instead of 96W, includes SD and microSD readers, has six USB-A ports instead of four, and can support four displays on the right Windows host.
That does not mean it is the better value for every desk. Value depends on whether you will use the extra display outputs. If you only run one external monitor and a Thunderbolt SSD, the SD5800T’s quad-video design is mostly wasted. The SD5780T’s downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports will matter more.
The SD5780T’s value case is also stronger when discounted. Its own YAML says the original $399.99 MSRP was high next to the CalDigit TS4, but that the dock becomes genuinely competitive in the $299 to $350 range. Since retailer pricing changes, the clean rule is this: compare the actual cart price before buying. At the same price, the SD5800T is the more capable multi-monitor dock. At a meaningful discount, the SD5780T can be the better buy for a two-display Thunderbolt desk.
Choose the Kensington SD5800T if

It has the higher score, higher display ceiling, lower listed MSRP, slightly higher host charging, more USB-A ports, and the more complete SD plus microSD media setup. If your Windows laptop can use quad 4K@60Hz and you want fixed HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, this is the Kensington dock to buy.
The SD5780T is still the better fit for many real desks. Its two downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports make it more flexible for storage, USB-C displays, and accessory chains. Its HDMI 2.1 4K@120Hz mode is cleaner for a single high-refresh display. It also avoids the trap of buying a quad-video dock when your laptop or workflow only needs two displays.
So the choice is not complicated. Pick the SD5800T if monitor count is the priority and your laptop can actually drive the setup. Pick the SD5780T if you want a premium Kensington Thunderbolt 4 dock for one or two displays, especially when Thunderbolt accessories are part of the desk.
