Overview: HP Docking Station Drivers
HP offers docking stations ranging from the premium HP Thunderbolt Dock G4 to budget USB-C hubs. Depending on the dock technology, you may need specific drivers, firmware updates, or both.
Thunderbolt docks (HP Thunderbolt Dock G4, HP Thunderbolt Dock G2, HP Thunderbolt Dock 120W G2) work natively without display drivers. Thunderbolt protocols handle video, data, and charging through a single cable. You should still apply firmware updates.
USB-C DisplayLink docks (HP USB-C Dock G5, HP USB-C/A Universal Dock G2) require a DisplayLink driver for multi-display output. Without it, external monitors will not work.
USB-C DP Alt Mode docks (HP USB-C Dock G4) pass video natively over USB-C for a single display. No drivers needed, but firmware updates are recommended.

HP Thunderbolt Dock G4

No display driver is required. However, HP recommends:

HP Thunderbolt docks work natively on macOS without driver installation. macOS includes built-in Thunderbolt support.
- Update your Mac to the latest macOS version (System Settings > General > Software Update)
- Connect the dock via the Thunderbolt cable
- External displays should appear automatically. If not, go to System Settings > Displays and click “Detect Displays”
- For audio, select the dock’s audio output in System Settings > Sound

HP USB-C Docks with DisplayLink
Several HP USB-C docking stations use DisplayLink technology for multi-display support. These include the HP USB-C Dock G5, HP USB-C/A Universal Dock G2, and similar models. DisplayLink requires a driver on both Windows and macOS.

Windows Installation Steps
- Download the latest DisplayLink driver from displaylink.com or HP Support
- Run the installer and follow the prompts
- Restart your computer when prompted
- Connect the HP dock to any USB-C port (or USB-A with the included adapter, if applicable)
- Windows should detect the external displays. Arrange them in Settings > System > Display
- Confirm the driver installed by checking Device Manager > Display Adapters for a “DisplayLink” entry
macOS Installation Steps
- Download the DisplayLink Manager app from displaylink.com
- Install the app and drag it to your Applications folder

The screen recording permission is mandatory on macOS. DisplayLink captures screen content to render on external monitors. Without it, external displays will remain blank.
HP Support Assistant
HP Support Assistant is a free Windows utility that automatically detects your connected HP hardware and offers driver and firmware updates. It is the easiest way to keep your HP dock up to date.
How to Use It
- Download from support.hp.com/hp-support-assistant or install from the Microsoft Store
- Open the application and sign in (optional but recommended)
- Connect your HP dock
- Click Check for updates and messages
- The tool will list available updates for your laptop and connected dock
- Install all recommended updates and restart when prompted
HP Support Assistant also runs scheduled background checks, so you will be notified when new dock firmware is available.
Note: HP Support Assistant is only available for Windows. macOS users must download firmware and driver packages manually from HP Support.
Common Issues and Fixes
Dock Not Detected
Symptoms: Laptop does not recognize the HP dock. No displays, USB, or network.
Fixes:
- Check the cable: Use the original cable. Thunderbolt docks require a Thunderbolt-rated cable. Regular USB-C cables will not work properly.
- Try a different port: Use another USB-C or Thunderbolt port on your laptop.
- Power cycle the dock: Unplug the dock’s AC power, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in, then reconnect to your laptop.
- Update BIOS: Download the latest BIOS from HP Support. BIOS updates frequently fix Thunderbolt detection issues.
- Check Thunderbolt Security settings: On some HP laptops, the BIOS has a Thunderbolt security setting that blocks new devices. Enter BIOS (press F10 at startup) and set Thunderbolt security to “No Security” or “User Authorization.”
- Run HP Support Assistant: It may detect and resolve the issue automatically.
External Displays Not Working
Symptoms: Dock is detected (USB and network work) but monitors show “No Signal.”

- Detect Displays: On Windows, press Win+P and select “Extend.” On macOS, go to System Settings > Displays and click “Detect Displays.”
- GPU driver: Update your Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA graphics driver to the latest version.
Dock Disconnects When Laptop Sleeps
Symptoms: After waking from sleep, the dock does not reconnect. You must unplug and replug the cable.
Fixes:
- Disable USB selective suspend: In Windows, go to Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > USB settings > USB selective suspend > Disabled.
- Update Thunderbolt firmware: This is a known issue that HP has fixed in multiple firmware updates.
- Disable Modern Standby (if applicable): Some HP laptops use Modern Standby (S0ix) instead of S3 sleep, which can cause dock reconnection issues. Search “How to disable Modern Standby” for your specific HP laptop model.

Ethernet Intermittent or Slow

- Try different USB ports: Some dock ports are USB 2.0 and others are USB 3.0. High-speed devices may not work in USB 2.0 ports.
