The Plugable UD-3900H is the horizontal version of Plugable's long-running USB 3.0 DisplayLink office dock. It gives mixed laptop desks a simple way to add two external monitors, wired Ethernet, audio, and six USB ports from one USB connection. Plugable includes both USB-A to USB-B and USB-C to USB-B host cables, so the dock can sit in front of older USB-A laptops, newer USB-C laptops, and even USB4 or Thunderbolt machines that only need basic office expansion. Video still comes from DisplayLink, not native USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode. That means the driver matters. Windows can install it through Windows Update, macOS needs DisplayLink Manager with Screen Recording permission, and ChromeOS has built-in support on modern releases. The display spec is office-grade: two displays up to 1920x1200 at 60Hz, with one physical HDMI output and one DVI output that can become HDMI or VGA through the included passive adapters. A single native HDMI monitor can reach 2560x1440 at 50Hz, but this is not a dual-1440p or 4K dock. It also does not charge the laptop. The included 20W power adapter runs the dock and its ports, while the laptop still needs its own charger.

Our Verdict

Good

The UD-3900H is easy to understand once you ignore the "dual HDMI" shorthand. It is a budget DisplayLink dock for two office monitors, not a modern USB-C Power Delivery dock. Its best use is a hot desk, support bench, school office, or home workstation where the monitors are 1080p or 1920x1200 and the laptops vary by age and connector. The horizontal body is useful if you want the dock under a monitor or within easy reach instead of standing vertically like the UD-3900C and UD-6950Z. Plugable's two-year warranty and support record also make it safer than anonymous DisplayLink docks in the same price range. The trade-offs are old but important: no laptop charging, USB 2.0 on four of the six USB ports, driver setup on macOS, no HDCP protected streaming on dock displays, and poor fit for gaming or video work. If you already own 1440p or 4K monitors, buy a higher-end DisplayLink or Thunderbolt dock. If you just need two ordinary office screens and a pile of basic peripherals on almost any laptop, the UD-3900H still does the job at a low price.
