The difference is the generation jump. The SD25TB5 has the stronger spec sheet because it solves two problems that the SD25TB4 cannot fully solve: high workstation charging and next-generation display bandwidth.

That is already better than many Thunderbolt 4 docks. It is enough for a broad range of Dell Latitude, XPS, and everyday business systems.
The SD25TB5 jumps far beyond that. Its YAML lists 240W host charging under powerDeliveryHost, and its product notes state up to 300W for compatible Dell systems. That puts it in a different class for Dell Precision and Pro Max style workstation desks. If your laptop can draw more than 130W through Dell’s supported setup, the SD25TB4 is no longer the top-tier answer. The SD25TB5 is.
Bandwidth is the second gap. The SD25TB4 is a 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 4 dock. The SD25TB5 is an 80 Gbps Thunderbolt 5 dock. That extra headroom is not automatically useful for every office worker, but it matters when you combine multiple high-refresh displays, fast storage, and workstation peripherals.
The SD25TB5 also gets the higher score in the product database: 8.4 versus 8.0. That is not a huge spread, but it matches the factual differences. This does not mean every Dell user should buy the SD25TB5. A laptop that only needs 65W, 90W, or 100W will not become better because the dock can supply more. The upgrade matters most when your machine actually needs the headroom.

The SD25TB5 YAML takes the same enterprise idea forward. Its introduction calls out remote management, fleet inventory, firmware, PXE boot, MAC address pass-through, Wake-on-LAN, WLAN to LAN behavior, and Intel AMT over Thunderbolt on supported vPro systems. The SD25TB5 is not just a faster physical dock. It is also positioned as Dell’s high-power managed desk anchor.
For a home user, these features may not matter. For IT, they can be the reason to stay inside Dell’s dock family rather than buying a consumer Thunderbolt dock with a prettier enclosure. Firmware control, inventory, and remote management reduce support friction when every desk has to behave predictably.
Management winner: tie, with an SD25TB5 advantage for high-power fleets. Both are Smart Docks. The SD25TB5 is the better fit when the managed fleet includes workstation-class Dell laptops.
Mac, Linux, ChromeOS, and Non-Dell Hosts
Both docks list broad OS compatibility, but neither should be treated as a Mac-first dock.
The SD25TB4 YAML lists Windows, macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS. It also documents important Apple host limitations: no MST extended desktop, no MAC address pass-through, no Wake-on-LAN, no firmware update utility through macOS, and up to 96W charging. It also warns that non-Thunderbolt USB-C laptops lose Thunderbolt behavior on the rear Thunderbolt ports, and Qualcomm-based PCs max out at two external displays.
The SD25TB5 YAML also lists Windows, macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS. Its Mac caveat is different: the dock cannot bypass Apple’s external-display limits. That means a base Apple Silicon Mac is still limited by the Mac, not by the Dell dock’s headline display capability. The SD25TB5 YAML also notes that non-Dell systems get a lower power ceiling and fewer Dell-specific features than compatible Dell systems.
So the practical advice is simple. If you are buying for Dell Windows systems, either dock makes sense. Reliability, Noise, and Desk Fit
The SD25TB4 has a quieter profile in the YAML because its listed common issues focus on macOS display behavior, MAC address pass-through validation, and bandwidth drops on non-Thunderbolt USB-C hosts. Those are compatibility and deployment issues, not desk-noise issues.
The SD25TB5 adds a new practical caveat: fan noise. Its known incompatibilities and common issues both mention the internal fan. The YAML notes that Windows Central and ServeTheHome called out fan noise, with ServeTheHome measuring about 35 to 36 dBA at one meter in a 34 dBA noise-floor room. That does not make the SD25TB5 unusable, but it matters if the dock sits next to a microphone, in a quiet office, or on a bedroom desk.
The SD25TB5 also uses a built-in host cable. The YAML lists this as a con because it cannot be replaced like a detachable Thunderbolt cable. The SD25TB4 lists an included 0.83 m host cable, but the YAML does not call out the same built-in-cable drawback.

What we can say from the data is that the SD25TB5 is the premium dock. Its own cons list calls the list price high even for Thunderbolt 5. The workaround in the YAML is clear: only pay the premium if you need 240W to 300W charging or Dell’s Smart Dock management features.
The SD25TB4’s value case is more practical. It gives you the Dell Smart Dock layer, quad 4K@60Hz support, 2.5GbE, dual downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports, and 96W to 130W charging depending on host. If that already matches the desk, paying for the SD25TB5’s extra headroom may not change the daily experience.
Value winner: conditional. The SD25TB5 is worth it for Dell workstation fleets, high-refresh multi-monitor setups, and Thunderbolt 5 headroom. The SD25TB4 is the better fit when Thunderbolt 4 and 4K@60Hz are enough.

If you are buying one dock for a powerful compatible Dell workstation, the SD25TB5 is the one to choose.
The Dell SD25TB4 remains a strong Smart Dock. It still supports up to four displays, still has 2.5GbE, still has dual downstream Thunderbolt ports, still works across Windows, macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS in the YAML, and still gives compatible Dell laptops up to 130W. For ordinary office desks, that may be enough.
Choose the Dell SD25TB5 if:
- You need Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth for displays, storage, or long-term headroom
- You use a compatible Dell workstation that can benefit from up to 300W charging
- You need more than the SD25TB4’s 96W standard or 130W compatible-Dell charging range
