The main difference: universal compatibility versus native Thunderbolt
The cleanest way to separate these docks is by host strategy.
The Dell UD22 is built for USB-C hosts with DisplayPort Alt Mode. Its YAML lists Windows 10 and 11, macOS 12.2.1 and later, Ubuntu 20.04 and later, and ChromeOS R100 and later. That wide OS list is the reason the UD22 makes sense in a mixed office. That flexibility has a cost. The UD22 uses DisplayLink software for full video capability. Dell’s own notes say the Synaptics DisplayLink driver is required for full functionality, especially three or four monitor setups and the second DisplayPort output. Without that driver, the dock does not behave like the spec table suggests. It falls back to a more limited USB-C dock where only HDMI plus DisplayPort 1 or the rear USB-C display output are active.
The WD22TB4 takes the opposite path. It wants a Thunderbolt 4 or compatible USB-C laptop, with the strongest experience on Dell business systems. The YAML lists no required driver for basic functionality, and Dell Dock Manager is optional for firmware updates and monitoring on Dell systems. The warning is just as important as the headline. The UD22’s full display story depends on DisplayLink. That means software install, OS permissions on macOS, driver updates, and the usual DisplayLink caveats around HDCP-protected video and troubleshooting. The YAML also notes mixed Mac feedback, including reports where only one monitor is recognized even after setup.
The WD22TB4 supports fewer displays, but the display path is native Thunderbolt. Its YAML lists dual 4K@60Hz via DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0, single 5K@60Hz, and single 8K@30Hz on Windows. The UD22 provides up to 96W host charging from its included 130W AC adapter. On paper, that beats the WD22TB4’s 90W standard USB-C PD for non-Dell systems. The downstream Thunderbolt port matters if you use Thunderbolt storage, a Thunderbolt monitor, or a Thunderbolt accessory. The UD22 does not offer that native Thunderbolt downstream path.
For everyday office peripherals, the UD22 has the better USB spread. For Thunderbolt accessories, the WD22TB4 is the obvious pick.
Software, firmware, and support friction
The UD22 asks more from the user or IT admin. Its common issues in the YAML include only two external monitors working after initial setup, one monitor being recognized on Mac after DisplayLink setup, Ethernet instability in some deployments, and a temperature-triggered fan that may become loud or keep spinning after the dock gets hot. The listed setup tips are also more involved: connect the power adapter first, install BIOS, graphics, firmware, and DisplayLink updates, use specific video ports before driver installation, and leave airflow around the dock.
That does not make the UD22 bad. It means the UD22 is a software-assisted dock. The reward is broad compatibility and high display count. The cost is more setup work.
The WD22TB4 is simpler in the YAML. It has occasional firmware update friction on non-Dell systems and occasional Mac wake display issues. Dell laptop users should install Dell Command Update, but the dock does not need a display driver for normal use. That matters in offices where fewer support tickets are worth more than an extra display output.
The WD22TB4 also has the modular host-module design from the YAML. That does not guarantee a future upgrade path to every new standard, but it is a useful serviceability and design point inside Dell’s dock family.

The UD22 earns its value when its unique strengths are used. Four-display support, broad USB-C compatibility, six USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, and 96W charging make sense when one desk has to support many laptop brands. If you buy the UD22 and only use two monitors on one Dell Thunderbolt laptop, you paid extra for flexibility you did not need.
This is why the score is close. The UD22 is more capable across mixed scenarios, but it is more expensive and more complex. The WD22TB4 is narrower, cheaper in YAML MSRP, and easier for Dell users.

Buy the UD22 when the desk is complicated: mixed laptop brands, three or four monitors, and IT support that can handle DisplayLink. Buy the WD22TB4 when the laptop is a Dell Thunderbolt system and the desk just needs to work every morning.
