They are not trying to solve the same problem, though.
The SD4782P is the flexible mixed-fleet dock. The catch is in the same YAML. Without DSC, Kensington’s installation guide drops the practical quad-monitor mode to 1080p at 30Hz. The product data also flags hosts without DisplayPort Alt Mode as incompatible for external display output. In plain terms: the SD4880P is better when the laptop is a strong match, but worse when you cannot confirm the host’s video capabilities.

Driver and setup: native video versus DisplayLink
The SD4880P is the cleaner dock when compatibility lines up. Its YAML lists the driver type as “None” and explains that it uses USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode rather than DisplayLink. Kensington DockWorks is optional for Windows management features, but the dock does not need a separate display driver for normal monitor output.
That matters in managed offices. Fewer display services mean fewer update surprises, fewer permission prompts, and less help desk friction after Windows updates. If every laptop is a Windows 10 or newer machine with a suitable USB-C, Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, or USB4 port, the SD4880P fits neatly.
The SD4782P is more software dependent. Its YAML lists DisplayLink as the driver type and points users to Synaptics for downloads. On Windows and macOS, the DisplayLink driver should be installed before use. On macOS, users also need to grant DisplayLink Manager the required screen recording permission before external displays work normally. On capability, the SD4880P gives you more hardware: more USB ports, faster Ethernet, a card reader, higher potential monitor count, and no DisplayLink driver. If your laptop supports what the dock needs, that is better value for a permanent Windows desk.
