Kensington SD5600T vs SD5780T: the short version
The Kensington SD5600T and Kensington SD5780T sit close enough in Kensington’s lineup that the names can blur together, but they are built for different desk problems.
The SD5600T is the older hybrid option. It uses Thunderbolt 3 at 40 Gbps, but it can also fall back to regular USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode. That matters in offices where some laptops have Thunderbolt and others only have USB-C video output. It also has a very practical video layout: two HDMI 2.0 ports and two DisplayPort 1.2 ports, so most dual-monitor desks can be wired without adapters.
The SD5780T is the newer Thunderbolt 4 dock. It is more focused, more modern, and better for buyers starting from scratch in 2026. Why the SD5780T wins overall
The SD5780T wins because it is the stronger current dock, not because the SD5600T is bad. The two products share several basics. Both are driverless. Both include host cables. Both require external DC barrel power. Both offer 96W host charging. Both have a three-year limited warranty. Both are native docks, so neither uses DisplayLink to work around base Apple Silicon display limits.
The difference is what happens after those basics. The SD5780T moves the platform forward. Thunderbolt 4 does not raise the headline bandwidth above 40 Gbps, but it gives the dock a cleaner modern baseline for Thunderbolt, USB4, and high-resolution display setups. Its HDMI 2.1 port can drive a single 4K display at 120Hz according to the YAML. Its downstream Thunderbolt 4 port can handle single 8K@60Hz, and compatible MacBook Pro or Max systems can run dual 6K@60Hz when the monitors and host support DSC 1.2 and DP 1.4 HBR3.
The SD5600T tops out lower. Its best native Thunderbolt 3 mode is dual 4K@60Hz. That is still enough for many desks, but it is no longer a premium ceiling. On USB-C Alt Mode hosts, the display story steps down again: one 4K@60Hz or dual 1440p@60Hz on HBR3 hosts, and one 4K@30Hz or dual 1080p@60Hz on HBR2 hosts.

The display comparison is the most important part of this page because the docks solve monitor problems differently.
The SD5600T gives you four dedicated video ports: two HDMI 2.0 and two DisplayPort 1.2. That is convenient if your desk already has standard HDMI or DisplayPort cables. You can use HDMI for two monitors, DisplayPort for two monitors, or match the outputs to what your monitors accept. On a Thunderbolt 3 host, the dock supports dual 4K@60Hz. On USB-C Alt Mode hosts, the YAML gets more conditional. HBR3 systems can do one 4K@60Hz display or dual 1440p@60Hz. HBR2 systems drop to one 4K@30Hz or dual 1080p@60Hz.
That makes the SD5600T useful in mixed offices. If someone brings a Thunderbolt laptop, they get the full dual 4K experience. If someone brings a USB-C Alt Mode business laptop, the dock still works, just with lower display limits. For IT teams trying to reuse one dock across older laptops, that flexibility can matter more than a spec-sheet win.

Ports: SD5600T has more legacy I/O, SD5780T has newer I/O
Port count is the SD5600T’s best argument. Its YAML lists one USB-C 3.2 port, six USB-A 3.2 ports, two HDMI 2.0 outputs, two DisplayPort 1.2 outputs, Gigabit Ethernet, a 3.5mm combo audio jack, a UHS-II SD reader, and a UHS-II microSD reader. For a desk with keyboards, receivers, webcams, card readers, and older monitors, that spread is easy to like.
The SD5780T is leaner. It has two downstream USB-C 4.0 Thunderbolt 4 ports, four USB-A 3.2 ports, one HDMI 2.1 output, 2.5 Gbps capable Ethernet, a 3.5mm combo audio jack, and a UHS-II SD reader. It does not have microSD. It also does not give you four dedicated video outputs. Instead, it expects you to use HDMI 2.1 plus Thunderbolt 4 downstream ports.
So this category depends on what you connect. If you have many USB-A peripherals and want both SD and microSD slots, the SD5600T is easier. If you have Thunderbolt storage, USB-C displays, or a newer monitor setup, the SD5780T is the better platform.
I would not reduce this to a simple port-count win. Six USB-A ports can be more useful than two Thunderbolt 4 downstream ports on one desk and less useful on another. The practical question is whether your peripherals are old-school USB-A and fixed video cables, or newer Thunderbolt and USB-C devices.

Power delivery: a clean tie
Both docks list 96W host charging in the product YAML. That is enough for most ultrabooks, business laptops, and many 15 to 16-inch productivity laptops under normal loads.
Neither dock has a meaningful power-delivery advantage here. The SD5780T is newer, but it does not increase host charging above the SD5600T. The SD5600T is older, but it still reaches the same 96W figure. Both use an external DC barrel power adapter.
If you are choosing between these two purely for charging, pick based on the rest of the dock. The wattage does not decide the comparison.

Ethernet and office features
This category is simpler. The SD5600T has Gigabit Ethernet. The SD5780T YAML lists 1 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps speeds on its RJ45 port.
For basic web browsing, video calls, and cloud documents, Gigabit is fine. For local NAS transfers, creative files, backup jobs, or office networks that have moved beyond 1 GbE, 2.5 GbE is a real upgrade. It is one of the clearest reasons to choose the SD5780T over the SD5600T.
Both docks have Kensington’s office DNA. The SD5600T supports optional Windows-only DockWorks software for connection, performance, and security management features. The SD5780T also has optional DockWorks support for network management features such as MAC address passthrough and automatic WiFi disabling on Ethernet connection. The SD5780T YAML also calls out dual Kensington lock slots and TAA compliance, which makes it better suited to managed office and government procurement environments.
Office winner: SD5780T. Faster Ethernet and stronger enterprise details make it the more current business dock.
Compatibility: the SD5600T’s best reason to exist
The SD5600T should not be dismissed just because the SD5780T wins the headline specs. Compatibility is the older dock’s real point.
The SD5600T is a Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C Alt Mode hybrid dock. That combination is useful when a workplace has mixed laptops. A Thunderbolt 3 system gets 40 Gbps bandwidth and dual 4K@60Hz. A USB-C Alt Mode system still gets docking features, but the display limits depend on HBR2 or HBR3 bandwidth. The dock does not need DisplayLink drivers for normal use.
The SD5780T is also driverless, and its YAML says it works with Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, USB4, and USB-C equipped laptops. But the same YAML is clear about the limitation: non-Thunderbolt USB-C laptops are limited to a single display and do not get the full 40 Gbps experience. If your entire laptop fleet is Thunderbolt or USB4, that is fine. If your fleet is a grab bag of older USB-C business machines, the SD5600T may fit better.
Mac users need to watch the same Apple Silicon limit on both docks. Base M1, M2, and M3 MacBooks support only one external display through these native docks. The SD5780T supports dual external displays on MacBook models with M1 Pro, M2 Pro, M3 Pro, M4 Pro, Max, or later chipsets that support more displays. The SD5600T is also limited by the Mac itself.
Compatibility winner: SD5600T for mixed Thunderbolt and USB-C Alt Mode fleets. SD5780T for modern Thunderbolt and USB4 systems.
Reliability and buying risk
The SD5600T YAML carries more caution. Kensington marks the product as no longer available on its own store, so Amazon and reseller listings should be treated as remaining stock. The YAML also notes split review feedback: MacSources and The Gadgeteer had positive day-to-day experiences, while Windows Central reported frustrating performance and connection problems. That does not mean every SD5600T is unreliable, but it does mean you should buy from a retailer with easy returns and test your exact laptop and monitors early.
The SD5780T has its own caveats, but they are narrower. The YAML mentions occasional second-monitor detection issues on some AMD Ryzen laptops when using a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter through a Thunderbolt downstream port. It also notes occasional Ethernet drops that may require DockWorks, firmware updates, or a different Thunderbolt 4 cable. Those are worth knowing, but the SD5780T does not carry the same no-longer-available warning in the YAML.
This is another reason the newer dock wins as the default. If you are buying used or discounted hardware with a specific compatibility goal, the SD5600T can be a good tool. If you are recommending one Kensington dock to a buyer who just wants a safer current purchase, the SD5780T is easier to defend.
Buying-risk winner: SD5780T. The SD5600T can be a value play, but it asks you to be more careful about stock, returns, firmware, and laptop testing.
Price and value
The SD5600T has the lower MSRP in the YAML: $289.99 versus $399.99 for the SD5780T. If both were sitting at MSRP, the SD5600T would look tempting for a basic dual 4K Thunderbolt 3 desk, especially because it includes so many built-in video outputs and USB-A ports.
But value is not only the sticker price. The SD5780T brings Thunderbolt 4, HDMI 2.1, 2.5 Gbps Ethernet, higher display ceilings, and a higher product score. Those are not small upgrades. If you plan to keep a dock for several years, the newer platform is worth paying more for unless your laptops cannot use the added capabilities.
The SD5600T becomes interesting when it is meaningfully cheaper and when its hybrid USB-C behavior solves a real problem. If the price is close, I would not buy the older dock just because it has more physical ports.
Value winner: SD5780T for most new buys. SD5600T if discounted and needed for USB-C Alt Mode fallback.
Verdict: buy the SD5780T unless the SD5600T solves a specific fleet problem
The Kensington SD5780T is the better dock in this comparison. It has the higher score, newer Thunderbolt 4 host connection, better Ethernet, better high-end display support, HDMI 2.1, and stronger office-focused details. It is the one I would recommend for a modern Thunderbolt or USB4 laptop desk.
The Kensington SD5600T is still useful, but it is a more conditional buy. Its appeal is not that it beats the SD5780T on raw performance. It does not. Its appeal is that it can bridge Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C Alt Mode laptops while giving you lots of legacy ports: dual HDMI, dual DisplayPort, six USB-A ports, SD, microSD, audio, and Gigabit Ethernet. For the right mixed office, that can be exactly what you need.
Choose the Kensington SD5780T if:
- You want the stronger current Kensington dock.
- Your laptop has Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, or USB4.
- You want 2.5 Gbps Ethernet instead of Gigabit.
- You use a 4K@120Hz, 8K, or dual 6K capable setup.
- You prefer HDMI 2.1 plus downstream Thunderbolt 4 over older HDMI and DisplayPort outputs.
- You have a MacBook Pro or Max system that can use dual native external displays.
- You care about TAA compliance, lock slots, and a cleaner modern office fit.
Choose the Kensington SD5600T if:
- You need one dock for both Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C Alt Mode laptops.
- Your monitors already use HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.2 and you want direct ports.
- You want more USB-A ports than the SD5780T provides.
- You need both SD and microSD card readers built in.
