Kensington SD5900T Review 2026 - Specs, Pros & Cons
The Kensington SD5900T is a Thunderbolt 4 and DisplayLink hybrid dock built for Mac users who want more external displays than Apple's native display limits usually allow. Kensington positions it as a 16-in-1 MacBook dock with one Thunderbolt 4 host port, two downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports, two shared HDMI or DisplayPort outputs, one extra DisplayPort output, 2.5GbE, SD and microSD readers, audio, and 96W certified laptop charging. The unusual part is how the video stack is split. Kensington says the Thunderbolt and DisplayPort paths can handle up to two plug-and-play displays, while the two HDMI or DisplayPort options use DisplayLink and require the DisplayLink driver. That gives supported MacBook models up to quad 4K at 60Hz, including M4 and M5 base models, Pro and Max chipsets, and M3 base models with the lid closed. Older base M1 and M2 MacBooks are listed for triple 4K at 60Hz through this dock, which is still far beyond their native single-display limit. This is not the cleanest dock for everyone. DisplayLink adds a driver, has screen-recording style permission prompts on macOS, and can cause HDCP-protected streaming apps to show black video. The 149W power supply also limits total charging headroom once the laptop is pulling close to 96W. But if your problem is simple, "I need three or four displays from an M-series Mac", the SD5900T is one of the few Thunderbolt 4 docks designed around that exact problem.

Excellent
The Kensington SD5900T makes the most sense for MacBook desks where monitor count matters more than a pure native Thunderbolt path. Compared with driverless docks like the Kensington SD5800T, it trades simplicity for flexibility: you install DisplayLink Manager, but you get a practical route to triple or quad 4K on MacBooks that would otherwise stop at one or two external monitors. The hardware is strong. The port layout covers most serious desks, 2.5GbE is better than the Gigabit Ethernet still used on many docks, the SD and microSD readers are rated for UHS-II, and the two downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports leave room for storage or another Thunderbolt accessory. Macworld liked the dedicated video mix and called it a strong high-bandwidth DisplayLink option. The AU Review praised the port selection and desk fit, while still flagging the 149W power supply and DisplayLink limitations. I would not buy it for gaming, color-critical video playback, or a desk that only needs one or two monitors. A driverless Thunderbolt 4 dock is cleaner there. For a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro owner trying to run several productivity monitors, the SD5900T is easier to justify. Just plan on installing DisplayLink Manager, test your streaming and protected-content workflow, and avoid treating the USB ports as a replacement for dedicated device chargers.
