The Microsoft Surface USB4 Dock is Microsoft's compact USB4 desktop dock for Surface and other USB-C, USB4, or Thunderbolt 4 laptops. It is small, light, USB4 based, and well documented, with useful business features such as PXE boot, Wake-on-LAN from Modern Standby, MAC address passthrough, and firmware updates through Windows Update on supported Windows PCs. The port mix is practical rather than generous: HDMI 2.1, two video-capable USB-C ports, one USB-A port, and Gigabit Ethernet cover a normal desk, but power users will quickly miss extra USB-A, audio, faster Ethernet, and card reader options. Independent testing from Dan S. Charlton confirms that the dock is a real USB4 device and that the 65W charging limit is intentional because Microsoft reserves power for the dock and downstream USB ports. That same testing found disappointing USB4 SSD performance through the dock compared with a direct connection, so this is not the best pick if external high-speed storage is a priority.
